About Deven Matthews

I’ve spent much of my career in hospitality, helping guests, solving problems, and occasionally finding myself in situations no employee handbook could have prepared me for. Those experiences eventually led me to the classroom, where I now teach hospitality management at the College of Southern Nevada and prepare future hotel leaders for the realities of the industry. My students quickly discover that some of the most valuable lessons come through my lived experiences, and those stories have become one of the most enjoyable parts of my classes.

My first book is actually a textbook: Hotel Operations: Practiced Theory for Future Managers. It grew out of my passion for teaching and my desire to give future hospitality leaders something practical they could use throughout their careers. It’s also filled with stories from my years at the front desk because, sometimes, the best lessons come from real experiences.

But every hotel has stories that don’t fit into a textbook. That’s where I Won’t Say I’ve Seen It All, But I’ve Seen Most of It comes in—a collection of true, unforgettable, hilarious, and sometimes unbelievable moments from behind the front desk—many of the same stories my students have encouraged me to share with a wider audience.

When I’m not writing or teaching, you’ll usually find me spending time with my wife and our six children, playing the piano, or working on my next project. I believe the best stories aren’t invented—they’re discovered in everyday life, often in the most unexpected places. Whether in the classroom or on the page, my hope is to entertain, encourage, and remind readers that sometimes the funniest moments reveal the deepest truths.
